It’s going to be a busy weekend across North Carolina.
Mother’s Day is this weekend. If you haven’t gotten a gift for your mom yet, you could take her out to see Pearl Jam in Raleigh, Old Crow Medicine Show in Winston-Salem or Ricky Skaggs in Wilmington.
If music isn’t her thing, there’s a vintage market in Burlington and the Beach Wrestling National Championships in Carolina Beach.
There’s also playoff hockey with the Capitals at the Hurricanes for Game 3.
This is graduation weekend for a bunch of universities around North Carolina, including UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, N.C. Central University, UNC Greensboro, North Carolina A&T, UNC Charlotte, UNC Wilmington and a bunch of others.
The people who make up North Carolina’s small towns represent cultures from around the world, and that’s what CultureFest in Oxford, north of Raleigh, is all about.
“CultureFest is a collaboration of cultures all coming together in one place,” organizers say.
The festival features “artisan vendors, cultural performances including Chinese Dragon dance, Native American tribal dances, African drummers and dancers, Appalachian Cloggers, Mexican Folkloric and Azteca performers and so much more.”
Food trucks and booths will also offer food from around the world.
The event runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Main Street in Oxford, North Carolina, Saturday.
This year’s SummerLark concert in downtown Winston-Salem features the legendary string band Old Crow Medicine Show.
The annual event is hosted by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist to raise funds for the Cancer Patient Support Program.
SummerLark will also feature food trucks and a free photo booth. It will be at Bailey Park in downtown Winston-Salem. Doors open Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and the music begins at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $61.30 through Ticketmaster or can be purchased at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds box office.
In downtown Burlington Saturday, the Vintage Revival Spring Market is taking over the Historic Depot. The event features vendors selling unique antiques and vintage wares along with local crafts.
“This market offers a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Mother’s Day weekend with family and friends. You’ll have the chance to discover delightful gifts, home decor, and handcrafted items that carry a story of their own,” according to organizers.
The market runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Now in its 17th year, organizers changed the name this year from BeachFest Matthews to Matthews SummerFest
The festival will take over Stumptown Park in Matthews, a Charlotte suburb. There will be music, a carnival, small vendors, exhibitors and craft beer.
The event runs from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is free.
Saturday night, country music greats Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder will play the Greenfield Lake Amphitheater in WIlmington. The music begins at 7 p.m.
“Spend an incredible night under the stars with music legends Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder,” event organizers said. “He has been credited with both reviving bluegrass music’s popularity and bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary country music.”
For those looking for a little more action this weekend, head out to Carolina Beach for the USA Beach Wrestling Nationals. Yes, this is a real thing, and it’s happening Saturday.
“Bring your sunscreen, your cooler, and your best beach chair and settle in for a great afternoon of beach wrestling,” according to the North Carolina Wrestling Association.
“Athletes from across the U.S. will battle for beach supremacy and bragging rights, as well as qualifying for future world level events,” the association said in its description of the event.
Competition begins at 11 a.m. Saturday on the beach in front of the band stand between the Hampton Inn and Courtyard by Marriott. There is no fee for spectators to come watch.
