WE know music venues across the UK are under threat. Last week’s news that Arts Council England has rejected an application from the Music Venue Trust to help support live music venues, was described as a slap in the face by the charity’s strategic director Beverly Whitrick. The 100 Club, which has played host to the likes of Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Jam, has warned that it is under genuine threat, facing the steep rent and rate hikes that have already driven so many other venues out of business, along with other small enterprises. As the club posted on its Facebook page this week in response to the news: “We need all the help we can get. If we’re not here next year, you know why.” Now, Selfridges seems to have taken up the cause. Starting yesterday (Wednesday), and running to October 18, Selfridges is turning itself into a venue for a series of musical collaborations as part of its new Music Matters campaign, with donations to the Music Venues Trust for every ticket sold – so snap them up. The Oxford Street store will provide a platform for new music artists in the store’s Ultralounge, which will be opened and closed by Skepta and A$AP Rocky, who will launch their global exclusive fashion-based concepts to coincide with the event. Amongst the artists appearing at Selfridges Presents and New Music Nights are UNKLE, Vessels and Kudu Blue. Tickets and full line-up available from Selfridges.com/musicmatters. And don’t forget Camden’s many small music venues need your support to survive, so visit them when you can, you never know what you will uncover.
• SO The Mystery Jets (above) are playing each of their albums in full at The Garage for the first time ever over five dates from September 25-30. The venue, which recently opened the retro-style The General Store, launched its summer cocktail menu this week, and gig-goers will be able to try out the cocktails or craft beer before and after the shows.
• THIS month’s Crawdaddy! guest is DJ Manuel Lovisutti, resident at London night Spoonful, who promises to fill the floor with a mix of R&B and Northern soul with some Latina and ska on the side. He joins regular DJs Gary, Lucienne and Danny at The Fiddler’s Elbow on July 21.
• DOUBLE Mercury Prize nominee Laura Mvula performs with the London Symphony Orchestra at Barbican tomorrow (Friday), where her music will be conducted and arranged by producer, drummer and composer Troy Miller, who has also worked with Gregory Porter and Amy Winehouse.
• US record producer and musician Tony Visconti (above) has worked with everyone from Bowie to Bolan. He hosts a night celebrating 50 years in the music business at Union Chapel on July 24 with special guests including Stewart Copeland, Bob Geldof, Imelda May and Holy Holy.
• ACCLAIMED producer and DJ Ali Renault, who runs the Vivod imprint, explores his record collection alongside Bill Ambrose at Spiritland tomorrow.
• AMERICAN singer-songwriter Tony Furtado (above) appears at The Green Note on July 24 with Benji Kirkpatrick
• THERE will be a special preview screening of Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary, plus a Q&A, with author and journalist Richard Havers at Ronnie Scott’s on July 25, tickets £15.
• GET ready for the return of Cubitt Sessions this summer, bringing a live music programme to the stage at Lewis Cubitt Square in the new King’s Cross development at Granary Square. From classical music, immersive theatre, surreal comedy, movement, street culture, experimental jazz and improvised opera, the programme is wide and varied – and best, free and open to all with performances running from July 26 to August 13.
