NEW HUDSON — Ashley Dekle was bummed out when the Hard Rock Café in Detroit closed several years ago, so she recreated one of her own here.
She and husband George Deckle opened Kilos Sandwich Shop, 56230 Grand River Ave., on April 30.
“The size of the building is perfect and I always wanted a mini Hard Rock and this already looked like my house, so I brought it here,” Ashley, 40, said.
The music aficionado has been to more than 300 concerts and has redecorated the space formerly occupied by Bob’s Carry-Out with music memorabilia galore. Nearly every inch of wall space is now occupied by framed images of stars with Michigan roots including Alice Cooper, Bob Seger, Eminem, Kid Rock and Ted Nugent, as well as those who hailed from much farther away including The Beatles and Led Zeppelin.
“I wanted a place where everyone could come in and enjoy all the different types of music and lyrics and songs, not politics,” Ashley said. “We should all be able to enjoy music and not worry about where Kid Rock and Eminem stand, it’s all about the lyrics.”
For George, the opening of the shop was really all about the hot corned beef sandwich.
He obtained the recipe from Bob of Bob’s Carry-Out, who retired in December after serving sandwiches for nearly 30 years.
George, who delivers baked goods for two companies, had supplied Bob with rye bread, “the best bread around,” he said, from Stiemar Bread in Windsor, Ontario.
“Bob talked me out of some money and here I am,” George, 43, said. “I liked the corned beef so much I bought the place.”Kilos Sandwich Shop also kept corned beef egg rolls on the menu. Other hot sandwiches include a Reuben, Roast Beef, Turkey Club, BLT, and Grilled Cheese.
Tuna and egg salad sandwiches are also available, as well as a variety of side salads including potato, macaroni and coleslaw, all made fresh daily.
The shop offers Michigan-made Faygo pop and Better Made Chips and on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, diners can get fries and Coney dogs made with Dearborn hot dogs and National brand chili.
Ashley and George, who continues to work his two delivery jobs, have a motto of keeping it simple with simply fresh sandwiches and invite you to give them a try.
“I am excited to hear people’s stories about music and want them to come back and eat more and more,” Ashley said. “We have good vibes and awesome food.”
“They should come and see Ashley, she’s the positive energy, and fun to talk to. I just like cooking,” George said. “Do a few things and do it right. That is my philosophy.”
Kilos Sandwich Shop, 56230 Grand River Ave., is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday, closed weekends. For more information, call 248-437-9212.
