The award honoured outstanding artistes, who have championed the Foundation’s mission and other issues relating to gender inequality and other harmful practices like Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in The Gambia.
HeforShe Music Movement is a five-year initiative launched to engage artists and music industry players in their broader fight against female genital mutilation and other forms of domestic violence affecting women in the country.
At the event, Dembo Jobarteh widely known by his moniker D Jobz, who is the founder of the HeforShe initiative, recalled that for more than a decade, the Neneh Foundation has been instrumental in youth empowerment particularly the girl child.
“It’s unwavering commitment to societal transformation has paved the way for what we witness today as a monumental collaboration that welcomes gender equity.”
He acknowledged that Sexual and Gender-based Violence in the creative industries is a global epidemic, but that in the country they’re taking a stand.
“The HeforShe Music Movement is a five-year initiative that I proudly launch to engage Gambian artists and music industry players in the fight against FGM and other sexual violence issues as aligned with SDG 5 and the Past Banjul Declaration.”
The movement, he said, is committed to amplifying their voices and missions using the power of audiovisuals.
‘If we are to end sexual and gender-based violence by 2030, we must do it with creativity, passion and bold advocacy. This is a call for partnership, solidarity and reform. That is what this fight is all about. As the world spins in its never-ending harmony, let us evolve with it, not behind, but beside our women.”
On her part, Hon. Fatou Kinteh, Minister of Gender and Social Welfare, acknowledged that women form half of the world’s population while in The Gambia they represent about 52% of the population.
“And there can never be sustainable economic development if women are left behind. So, it’s very important to get the women on board. If we want to achieve the equity, equality, and empowerment of women. We must work together to address gender-based violence social norms and we must re-determine the progress of women.”
She assured of her Ministry’s continuous support to such initiatives for the empowerment of women and girls.
Receiving award, Jali Suso, thanked the Neneh Foundation for the recognition and assured of her continuous advocacy for women.
The event also witnessed a musical performance by some of the country’s finest artistes namely: ST, Nyancho, Jali Suso among others.
