FLINT, MI — The Levitt AMP Flint Music Series that kicks off next week will bring a variety of musical genres to the city, performed by bands from across the country and one from Ukraine.
The concerts are scheduled for 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays on the back lawn of Totem Books, 620 W. Court St., and start on May 27, with a performance by the LowDown Brass band, a Chicago-based group that features dance hall and street beat music.
Communities First Inc., host and organizer of the series, was awarded a $30,000 grant from the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation for the concerts. The grant was matched by community contributions.
The Levitt AMP Music Series is a national program funded by the foundation, which partners with nonprofits to bring live music to underused outdoor spaces.
Other sponsors of the Flint series include Totem, ELGA Credit Union, Square, Jazz on Wheels, and Kettering University.
“This is more than a music series — it’s about creating a place where people from all walks of life can come together and feel a sense of belonging,” Glenn Wilson, president and chief executive officer of CFI, said in a statement released by the nonprofit organization.
CFI said this year’s concerts will build on the foundation laid by Jazz on Wheels, the presenter of the series in 2023 and 2024.
“We’re proud to be the new organizers of this amazing series and excited to continue its legacy while expanding its impact across Flint,” Wilson’s statement reads.
CFI’s announcement says the free performances will also feature food trucks, games, and local community resources.
Parking is available at the Stockton House, 720 Ann Arbor St., and in the overflow parking lot of the White Horse Tavern, 621 W. Court St.
Here is the full list of the concert dates, each of which is scheduled at Totem except for a special event on Friday, Aug. 1, at the back lawn of Flint City Hall.
