The UK’s creative industries (music included) are unhappy with the government’s mooted plans for an ‘opt out’ copyright exception for AI training. But what is the alternative? Yesterday a body called the Copyright Licensing Agency (CLA) revealed details of a collective licensing model it has devised for the book publishing industry.
“A scalable collective licensing solution that ensures remuneration for publishers and authors – in particular those not in a position to negotiate direct licensing deals,” is how it described its Generative AI Training Licence. Food for thought for the music industry, perhaps, with the caveat that direct licences are likely to remain rightsholders’ focus.
In other news, labels body the BPI has commissioned a survey to back its views on how AI training should be regulated. It says the AudienceNet study of more than 1,750 music fans in the UK found that the majority think fully AI-generated music should be clearly labelled; that artists’ music or vocals shouldn’t be used or ingested without permission; and that “human creativity is essential in the creation of music”.
