The musical is set in Dublin in 1982 and follows 16-year-old Conor who forms a band to impress mysterious aspiring model Raphina. The story explores themes of young love and the transformative power of music against the backdrop of 1980s Ireland.
The U.K. production follows successful runs in Boston and New York, with a Tony Award-winning creative team at the helm. The book is by Enda Walsh (“Once”), with direction by Rebecca Taichman (“Indecent”), and music from Gary Clark (of Danny Wilson fame).
The creative team includes choreography by Sonya Tayah, set and costume design by Tony Award-winner Bob Crowley, video design by Luke Halls, music supervision by Depeche Mode’s Peter Gordeno, co-costume design by Lisa Zinni, and voice and dialect coaching by Hazel Holder.
“‘Sing Street’ has followed me throughout my career,” Hunter said. “Now, to be making my live theatre debut with this beautiful stage adaptation, featuring an incredible set of songs from the movie with brand-new music for the stage is a dream.”
“After sold out runs in New York and Boston, we are so thrilled to finally show the ‘Sing Street’ musical to U.K. audiences this summer at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre,” Clark added. “As well as all of the fan favorites from the film, John Carney and myself have written some brand-new songs to showcase our completely new and incredibly talented cast.”
