Oasis top list of Best British songs of all time – full 100 ranked – Manchester Evening News

Oasis have topped an annual list of the best British songs of all time for the second year running. The Manchester rock legends dominated the top 100 list, as voted by listeners of Radio X.
The full 100 was counted down across the Easter weekend on the radio station. And on Easter Monday, listeners got to hear the top 10, and the song that won the most votes.
And it was Oasis classic Live Forever that claimed the top spot – for a second year running.
With Oasis fever at an all time high ahead of the band's highly-anticipated reunion tour this summer, the votes came flooding in for their iconic anthems.
Live Forever was one of four Oasis tracks making the top 10 – alongside Champagne Supernova, Slide Away and Don't Look Back in Anger.
They were also the most popular band on the list – having a record-breaking 16 songs in the top 100 for the first time this year.
It is the 10th year of the annual Best of British with B&Q poll on Radio X.
Queen’s iconic 1975 anthem Bohemian Rhapsody was named second in the list for a consecutive year, while The Stone Roses’ I Am The Resurrection moves up one place to fifth.
The Rolling Stones’ Gimme Shelter jumps up two places to sixth, and Geordie hero Sam Fender’s Seventeen Going Under re-enters the top 10, moving up five places into seventh.
Amy Winehouse was the highest placed female artist on a list otherwise dominated by male bands and artists, with her hit Back To Black coming in tenth on the list.
Oasis were the most popular artist with 16 entries – two more than last year – with fan favourites like The Masterplan, Morning Glory and Wonderwall all making it into the top 100.
Behind Oasis were Arctic Monkeys with eight tracks in total, followed closely by The Stone Roses with seven, who also had this year’s highest climber – Fools Gold, jumping up 68 places to 11th place.
Bands from Greater Manchester dominated the top 100 list – with songs hailing from the region the most represented for a second year running.
There were 37 songs from 11 different Greater Manchester-based artists, including The Smiths, Joy Division, Courteeners and Oasis as well as Wigan's The Lathums, The Verve, Bury's Elbow and Stockport's Blossoms.
Matt Deverson, Managing Editor of Radio X, said: “‘Live Forever’ had to be number one, didn’t it? And with Oasis dominating the 100 with 16 songs in the list, it reflects the growing excitement among Radio X listeners for what will be the biggest music and cultural moment of the year, from the biggest band in the world right now!”
