According to Menahga choir director April Hodge and band director Beth Hahn, Menahga students were actively involved in the contest, not only as participants but also as organizers. “They filled several roles, such as door monitors and scorekeepers, and even operated a concession stand that served more than 100 taco-in-a-bag lunches,” the teachers wrote.
More than 20 Menahga High School Choir members participated in 11 vocal entries, including such classic songs as “Time in a Bottle,” “Scarborough Fair” and “Skye Boat Song.” There were two large ensembles (approximately 12 students in each), two duets and seven solos.
Eight of the 11 entries received the highest, “superior” rating, and two received the second-highest, “excellent” rating. The teachers noted that students can choose not to take a score and to sing for instructional feedback only.
In addition, the school held a make-up contest for the canceled, April 2 instrumental music contest. Approximately 14 students took part, performing such pieces as “Amazing Grace,” “The Ash Grove,” “Simple Gifts” and more. The event included five solo acts and four ensembles with various instrument combinations. All nine entries earned a “superior” rating.
“It was a busy day here at Menahga Public School,” Hodge and Hahn added, thanking teachers for the use of their classrooms, custodians for moving pianos and helping set up and restore everything, and the paraprofessionals who helped with concessions and kept students on task.
