Peter Graham’s latest work, ‚Mill Town Revival‘ which was commissioned BBC Radio 2 for Black Dyke Band as part of the Bradford City of Culture Celebrations 2025 has now been released.
The work was given it world premiere as part of a live broadcast from St George’s Hall in Bradford which also featured performances by Marti Pellow and Carli Paoli.
The work takes its inspiration from a visit made in 1876 by the Fisk Jubilee Singers, a group of freed slaves from Tennessee, and references three spirituals that they sung: ‚Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho‘, ‚Swing Low, Sweet Chariot‘ and ‚Evr’y Time I Feel the Spirit‘.
The group, comprising freed slaves from Fisk University in Nashville USA, made multiple appearances at St George’s Hall Bradford in the late 19th Century and did much to break down racial barriers4BR
