Classically trained countertenor JJ of Austria is the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest winner.
JJ beat 25 other competitors during Saturday’s grand final in the Swiss city of Basel, with his song Wasted Love that combined operatic, multi-octave vocals with a techno twist.
„This is beyond my wildest dreams. It’s crazy,“ said the singer after being handed the glass trophy.
He claimed victory with a total of 436 points.
Taking to the stage, JJ tearfully thanked his supporters.
„I want to thank my entire family, my entire team, thank you so much for making my dreams come true. And especially to you Europe, thank you for making my dreams come true.
„Love is the strongest force in the world, let’s spread more love. Thank you so much.“
It was Austria’s first win since bearded drag queen Conchita Wurst took line honours in 2014.
The UK finished in 19th place, scoring a disappointing 88 points with Remember Monday’s What the Hell Just Happened.
Israel’s Yuval Raphael took second spot in a competition that was shadowed by the Gaza war, and marked by discord over Israel’s participation.
Estonia’s Tommy Cash came third with Espresso Macchiato, and Swedish entry KAJ, who had been favourite to win with the jaunty Bara Bada Bastu, came fourth.
Acts from 26 countries – trimmed from 37 entrants through two elimination semifinals – performed to some 160 million viewers for the continent’s pop crown.
