A MAJOR music festival will be returning to Wellington this summer after Somerset Council agreed to grant the necessary licence.
Huw Weston applied for a licence to stage ‘Welliestock’ at Wellington Rugby Football Club for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic.
The council’s licensing sub-committee west was due to meet in Taunton on April 30 to discuss the licence after Avon and Somerset Constabulary raised numerous issues with Mr Weston’s event management plan.
But the hearing was cancelled at short notice after the parties reached an agreement – meaning that the event will be going ahead.
Welliestock was last held in Wellington in 2018, with an attempt to restart the event in 2024 having to be called off due to rising costs.
Under the new licence, the event can take place on July 5, with live and recorded music being permitted on site between 11:30am and 11pm, with alcohol being able to be sold for consumption on the premises from 11am onwards.
The event will have a maximum capacity of 1,700 people (including performers, food vendors and on-site security), with Mr Weston anticipating that around 400 of those attending would be under the age of 18.
The police had raised concerns the management plan was “not sufficient nor accurate”, which prompted several significant revisions ahead of the April 30 hearing.
Mr Weston welcomed the council’s decision to grant the licence in a statement on the Welliestock Facebook page.
He said: “We are absolutely delighted that after months of writing, re-writing documents, hitting walls, achieving results, and reading negative comments from the same old boring people who never attend anyway.
“With guidance from authorities, we now have the license.”
Tickets for Welliestock will be on sale from Nurtured by Nature on South Street from Saturday (May 10), costing £20 for adults and £10 people 16 and under
