Music figures across the UK have signed an open letter showing solidarity with the trans community. The letter was penned by queer artist Tom Rasmussen, with support from Olly Alexander and his manager Martha Kinn, and is in response to a recent controversial ruling from the UK Supreme Court which stated that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex, effectively limiting trans people’s right to access a number of spaces and services, including workplaces, public areas, sports, schools and public associations.
The letter calls for the UK music industry to protect the vibrancy and inclusivity of the music industry, calling on UK industry organisations — including labels, publishers, managers and trade bodies like PPL, BPI and Musician’s Union — to take a stand: “We have long celebrated a multitude of voices and identities, and the music industry here in the UK is one of our most trailblazing and culturally vital assets – one which trans, intersex and non-binary people are woven into in every aspect of the industry, past, present and future.”
Signatories include artists like Charli XCX, Rina Sawayama, Imogen Heap and Four Tet, as well as employees of major music industry businesses. The letter is open to sign here.
