We were already intrigued when we heard the words “throuple”, “Italo disco”, and “Princess Chelsea feature” in the same sentence — and Grecco Romank’s new single “Don’t Get Caught” lives up to the hype.
Released to kick off New Zealand Music Month, it’s a dizzying slice of synth-pop, with pulsing beats, tragic undertones, and the kind of warped drama we’ve come to expect from the Tāmaki Makaurau-based trio: Billie Fee, Mikey Sperring, and Damian Golfinopoulos.
The song pulls from the band’s “public persona as a throuple” and is loosely inspired by the “dark true story” of poet Gu Cheng, who fled China for Waiheke Island, where his life ended in tragedy. While the lyrics don’t name names, Grecco Romank describe the track as a “thorny and tragic tryst,” tapping into the emotional weight of the story for its fuel.
Taite Music Prize-winning Princess Chelsea sounds suitably haunting on the track — and delivered a quote that’s somehow even more unhinged than the song’s backstory.
“When Grecco asked me to sing on a tragic love song about a throuple gone wrong I jumped at the chance. I’m a big fan and love to collaborate with artists I admire. I wasn’t aware of this Waiheke legend even though I live here.
“Weirdly – a few days after I agreed to sing on ‘Don’t Get Caught,’ a man approached me at the Waiheke chilli sauce festival and told me an in-depth story about a murderous Chinese poet who moved from China to Rocky Bay – turns out the scene of the crime was next door to my house.”
On top of all that, Grecco Romank has also announced their third studio album, Arts Colony. The ambitious project comes with a 300-page, full-colour art book featuring contributions from the band and 30 other creatives from across Aotearoa.
The band is celebrating with a release party at Double Whammy on May 24. The night will feature Pōneke/Whanganui hip-hop duo Bad Taste (Alphabethead + Young Ghost), electronic artist Body Beat Ritual, and newcomers Stud Finder (get tickets here)
Grecco Romank’s previous singles, including “2 Hot 2 Hunt” and “Sidetracked” (ft. Our Carlson) have already proven them to be a thrilling group to listen to.
Their 2023 album Wet Exit (read their track-by-track breakdown) earned the band a nomination for the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards Te Manu Taki Whanokē o te Tau Best Alternative Act.
Grecco Romank’s “Don’t Get Caught (Feat. Princess Chelsea)” is out now.
