The godmother of Toledo jazz vocalist Ramona Collins will headline the fourth Discovers Music Series concert at St. Timothy Episcopal church, 871 East Boundary, Perrysburg, Sunday, May 4 at 3 p.m. doors to the recital space for the free performance will open at 2:30 p.m.
Collins has long been a staple of the Toledo music scene including her long tenure at the now closed venues Rusty’s Jazz Café and Murphy’s Place as well as at the former Art Tatum Heritage Jazz Festival. . More recently, she has been heard at Lucille’s at Tolhouse and often at Jazz in the Garden at the Toledo Botanical Gardens.
Collins has embraced a number of musical genres; however, she may be best known for her expressive interpretations of jazz standards. In 2021, The Blade’s Tom Henry dubbed her “the hardest working singer in Toledo.”
She will be joined by saxophonist Mark Lemle, pianist Eric Dickey, Kevin Eikum, bass and Brad Billmaier, drums.
The Discovers Music Series is sponsored by Timothy’s Perrysburg Foundation and hosted by St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church. This marks the second season that Discovers has been an integral part of the new Timothy’s Perrysburg Foundation, which supports three initiatives: Discovers Music Series; The Clothesline, a free clothing opportunity; and the new St. Tim’s Kitchen, which supports food insecurity by repurposing rescued food.
