FRONT PORCH FACTOR: The second single from the upcoming album The Limiting Factor by Hunter Hoskins is out now. The follow-up release to his single from last year, “Nazi Down The Street,” this new track is named “Break Of Day,” and longtime local listeners will find favor with this one. Hoskins’ band on this includes decades-long Athens stars Kevin Lane, Matt Lane, Jay Gonzalez, Brandon Reynolds and Neil Golden. From that list alone, you should be able to deduce that this is a breezy, Americana-ish tune that’s pretty perfect for spring and summer. Word from Hoskins is that his entire album has been finished for a couple of years but, as of now, there’s no definite release date. Find this new single on streaming services starting this week.
THE FLOORBOARDS GREATEST HITS: Chunklet Industries has re-released the first of a planned three-release series of old Athens cassette compilations Samizdat. This first volume was originally released in the late 1980s, and the series was the work of Haynes Collins and Gene Lyons, each of then-current Eat America, as well as others. As with anything that lists a full 22 tracks of bands you may have never heard of, this can be hit or miss. Previously issued in an edition of fewer than 200, this is a cultural curiosity whose preservation is important even if it makes for occasionally uneven listening. That said, featured artists here include Bar-B-Q Killers, Jack-O-Nuts, Paul Hammond, Vic Chesnutt, Danny Cottar, Primates, Damage Report and Porn Orchard. Those are, by far, the folks you’re most likely to have heard of. As of this writing, the price for this is planned to be around 10 bucks. Future plans include a set of all the Samizdat releases accompanied by a book. Find this at chunklet.bandcamp.com.

LIVE RIGHT NOW: Alt-rock popsters Red Dakota continue to plug new singles in lieu of an album, and the latest of these is “Couch Song.” While the band’s self-titled six-song EP comes out in August, with the release of this newest single the whole thing will be 50% released by the time you read this. This newest single tends the same ground the band has made its hallmark: 1990s-era alt-pop a’la Avril Lavigne, Jimmy Eat World, et al. This was recorded at Full Moon Studios and mastered via The Glow, so it’s no surprise that the results are crisp, clean and with a nice, full drum sound. Find this on Spotify and other major streaming services, and click over to instagram.com/reddakotamusic to follow along.
THREE NEW ONES: About 13 months ago a little three-song, self-titled release came out by electronic project The Tonor Project. Last week a new three-song collection, Sharps, was released. It’s very much in line with its predecessor in that it’s very crisp and clean, but still has the shadows of being demos on it. It’s at its most experimental on final track “(sharps/ 0.0nm) panic I,” but even this doesn’t veer very far away from its central position as a purveyor of recognizable electronic patterns with attendant bleeps and bloops. I dig it, at least. Find this mystery over at thetonorproject.bandcamp.com.
EASE ON DOWN THE ROAD: There’s almost nothing Grateful Dead fans enjoy more than hitting the road, and Dead tribute act Cosmic Charlie can scratch that itch for you. They’ll be playing up in Hartwell on Friday, May 9. The show takes place at The Station, which is located at 43 Railroad St., and is slated for 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 in advance and may be purchased at thestationofhartwell.com.
GO AWAY: A couple of weeks ago death rockers Tears For The Dying released its version of “Nazi Goths Fuck Off,” which was originally recorded and released by Finnish artist Suzi Sabotage in 2021. In the release notes the band says, “Our arrangement is shaped by the increasingly heated political and emotional climate in the U.S. As the country accelerates toward full-blown fascist authoritarianism, this release is not just timely, but necessary.” Also included in the notes are the lyrics, which is helpful because they’re very difficult to understand on the record. The tune itself is a mid-tempo number, and the part I’m most partial to on this particular song is its percussion, which is arranged quite creatively. Find this at tearsforthedying.bandcamp.com.
COMING AROUND AGAIN: Although it’s been a long minute since he released any brand new music, songwriter Lander Combs will perform at The World Famous on Thursday, May 8. He’s joined on the bill this night by Liz Farrell and Matt Knox. Combs’ music is, in the most recognizable terms, electro-inspired folk with an Americana-ish aesthetic. It’s difficult to parse what I’m trying to say here, but head over to landercombs.bandcamp.com and see if you can tell what I mean. To keep up with the other artists please see instagram.com/mattknoxmattknoxmattknox and lizfarrell.bandcamp.com.
