She’s back. Lorde has officially announced the incoming release of a new single titled “What Was That.” The new song will be released “soon” as Lorde’s first official single in four years.
The New Zealand native revealed the song’s inquisitive title across her social media platforms, and shared what appears to be the singe’s cover art. The photo features a close up shot of Lorde wearing a red shirt while her face drips sweat. The image was taken by American photographer Talia Chetrit.
Lorde previously teased “What Was That” on TikTok, and in a voice note to fans that hinted at her long-awaited return to music after her last album, “Solar Power.”

“I just wanted to say hi, because everything is about to change,” she said in the message. “These are the last moments where it’s just us, which is crazy. But so right. I’m so ready.”

The TikTok post — Lorde’s first on the platform — was a video of her walking through Washington Square Park in New York City while listening to “What Was That” — “Since I was 17, I gave you everything/ Now we wake from a dream, well baby, what was that?” she sings.
Lorde has been more active in recent weeks, and just this weekend appeared as a special guest at Coachella for Charli xcx’s main stage set. She joined Charli for a surprise performance of “Girl, So Confusing,” a remix that appeared on Charli’s blockbuster “Brat” remix album. Lorde had also previously joined Charli onstage in New York in September.
