The Nathan & Jessie quartet, on tour from California, play a lively, uptempo mix of swinging jazz and folk, with resonator guitars, accordion and violin all featured. They’ve got two shows in town, Wednesday, April 16 at The Admiralty Lounge and Thursday, April 17 at the Orion’s Odd Fellows Temple Room.
Ukraine’s YAGÓDY take the traditional folk songs of that country and its neighbors, then add bass, drums and some modern pop trappings. With four vocalists, they get up to some remarkable feats of harmony and counterpoint. (This may be beside the point, but they’ve also got some pretty amazing outfits.) As you might expect considering everything going on in their home country, their music emphasizes themes of freedom and resilience. They’re at the Lincoln Theatre on Friday, April 18.
The organizers of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival have really gone out of their way to bring some fun music to downtown Mount Vernon for the part of the festival they call Tulip Tunes. They’ve got free outdoor music starting at 10 a.m. each day of the festival. Highlights include funk with Cozmic Sauce on Friday, April 18, veteran Seattle indie rockers Telekinesis on Saturday, April 19, and country/Americana favorites from County Rose on Sunday, April 20.
Over the years one of the ideas that gets talked about the most but never seems to happen is the need for more multi-genre bills. Well, if you want to see a real assortment of excellent music in one evening, how about the Blue Room on Saturday, April 19? You get Brazilian-infused pop from The Cosmic Neighborhood, psychedelic indie rock from Smooth Kiwi, hip-hop from CHRVNS, and acoustic blues from The Preacher & The Freight Train all in one night. This lineup is basically the dream team of the local scene, so if you can’t find something to enjoy there, I don’t know if I can help you.
