Non-profit initiative Lila has launched The South Asian Soundcheck, the first survey dedicated to understanding the South Asian experience across the UK music industry.
Supported by the Musicians’ Union, UK Music, British Recorded Music Industry (BPI), and Music Managers Forum (MMF), the survey aims to tackle the inequalities, lack of fair representation and barriers that South Asians face in the music industry.

South Asian music is a significant part of UK musical history, yet South Asian creators and professionals remain underrepresented.
Dr Diljeet Kaur Bhachu, MU Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Officer said: “We are really pleased to see this survey of South Asian musicians in the UK music industries being launched, and excited for its findings. Data is a key element in mapping and progressing representation, as the MU has found with the Musicians’ Census.
“We are glad to have contributed to shaping this new survey by Lila. South Asian communities across the globe hold pluralistic, nuanced and diverse identities and experiences. The South Asian Soundcheck has the power to highlight these nuances within the music industries context, and enhance the experiences of South Asian music creators and professionals.”
South Asian music creators, managers, executives, and behind-the-scenes professionals are all encouraged to contribute their experiences and help shape the future of South Asian music in the UK.
Key areas of the survey include:
Participants will also be entered into a prize draw, where they will have the chance to win a pair of AKG K271 headphones or studio time at Darkwood Studios.
The survey takes 10 minutes to complete and closes in mid-June.
