Experience the return of light at Buckholt Mayfest with community arts, music, and family activities amidst the bluebells.
Spring is awake and the Buckholt is filled with bluebells! From May 1st-11th they are celebrating the return of light with a community Mayfest of live and local arts, woodland family activities and archaeology.
Some campfire concert events are now sold out.
Things kick off on Thursday May 1st – May Day and Beltane – with a campfire concert that brings together internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Catherine King and pioneering Herefordshire folk duo Alula Down, to explore their shared fascination with landscape, folklore and seasons.
On Saturday May 3rd, they welcome two folk heroes in Geoff Cripps and Wynford Jones, both original members of the Chartists, creators of the legendary 1980s folk-rock album, Cause for Complaint. Their songs include some of the most moving reflections on life in the Welsh Valleys. They will be supported by rising stars The Blessed Crow, a father & daughter folk duo from Risca.
Saturday May 10th will be a celebration of music without borders with Welsh guitar wizard Dylan Fowler – whose new album has been hailed as an ‘eclectic masterpiece’ – and the Gambian multi-instrumentalist, Suntou Susso. Suntou’s career is on a meteoric rise and last year he played 29 festivals world-wide, including Glastonbury, WOMAD and Green Man.
On Bank Holiday Saturday and Sunday there are affordable bushcraft adventures for young ones and their families led by Bearfoot and Beyond. And on May 10th a chance to enjoy hands-on art workshops with the creators of our popular sculpture trail, developed in collaboration with Hereford College of Arts.
Also on May 10, there will be free woodland busking performances from Welsh harpist Delyth Jenkins, singer-songwriter Heulwen Williams and local bluesman Connor Bevan. They will be walking the woods, playing for whoever is out enjoying the spring and wants a song. Come along, see the bluebells – and have your own concert!
They wrap things up on Sunday May 11, when archaeologists Kate Churchill and Amelia Pannett from Cadw will be our guides to the ancient, hidden world of the Buckholt in our archaeological talk and tour of our community dig and its extraordinary discoveries. This will begin at Welsh Newton Village Hall, before going up to the hill fort.
Most events take place in Buckholt Woods, around our community shelter, with its stunning views west to the Black Mountains. There will be parking available. These are community events and there is no bar, but you can bring your own picnics. Well behaved dogs are welcome!
