Jim Root Speaks On The Absence Of New Slipknot Music – Theprp.com

While there’s been indications that new music is in the works from masked metal phenomenon Slipknot, it would appear that you shouldn’t be expecting any substantial body of work to arrive anytime soon. Energized by the addition of drummer Eloy Casagrande to their ranks, the band teased last spring that a new song by the name of “Long May You Die was seemingly close to a release. However, a year later, that song has yet to materialize.
The band’s percussionist M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan also hyped the upcoming arrival of new music from the band last summer, telling Revolver:
“Well, one thing I can say is this: There’s always going to be new Slipknot music. But we’ve also said that there is a filter, and we are the filter, and that filter must go through everyone. And when I was telling you that we’re doing a lot better communicating, now apply that to communicating about music.
I can say that there’s gonna be music sooner than you can imagine, delivered to you in a way you can’t imagine. And I’m excited because we’re not on a label. And there’s a lot of dismay with that, you know what I mean? But there’s also a lot of middle fingers with that. I love it, you know? Come and get us, or we’ll come to get you!”
It’s a safe guess that given his level of enthusiasm, fans likely imagined music would be arriving a lot sooner. However, an interview with the band’s guitarist Jim Root conducted this past December was newly published online this past weekend, and seems to provide at least some insight into the holdup.
Speaking with Guitar Interactive, Root was asked if working on new music was a focus for the band at the time, to which he replied:
“Not diligently. Honestly, we’ve been touring so much since [drummer] Eloy [Casagrande] joined the band that my inspiration is nearly zero. And there’s a bunch of music that was written during COVID that I’m not interested in. And I think everybody else in the band gets it too, and I think they’re kind of, like, ‘Okay, we need to just kind of, like, maybe sweep all that shit under a rug and start fresh.’
And I wanna get touring behind us. I wanna have at least a month off just to shut my brain off and sleep and all that kind of stuff. And then when I find myself going out to my little home studio and putting riffs together, then I’ll know it’s time to start.”
Given the time that has passed since said interview was conducted, there’s always a chance that progress could have been made. However, Slipknot spent much of 2024 touring on the 25th anniversary of their 2x platinum self-titled album and headed down to Australia this Past February/March to headline their ‘Knotfest Australia‘ run.
That trek concluded on March 11th, with the band next set to hit the road again this June. With Root ruling out what the group were already sitting on, there hasn’t exactly been ample free time to truly focus on their eventual eighth studio outing. As it stands right now, the band’s 2025 touring plans at the moment include:
