Anirudh Ravichander, one of India’s top music composers, has revealed a surprising aspect of his creative process—and it’s anything but traditional.
He shared that nearly 85% of the music his team creates isn’t made for any specific film. In most cases, he composes songs even before hearing the story or meeting the director.

This is a major shift from the usual industry norm. Typically, composers wait to understand a film’s mood and narrative before crafting music. But Anirudh prefers spontaneity. His pre-composed tracks are later matched to films during production.
It’s a method that has worked for him so far. He first made waves with Why This Kolaveri Di in 2012.

Since then, he’s composed for 36 films in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, winning two Filmfare Awards South and ten SIIMA Awards. His work on Shah Rukh Khan’s all-time blockbuster Jawan also earned acclaim.
However, this approach comes with risks. Composing without knowing the story can lead to an emotional mismatch.

That’s why some of his songs in films like Devara, Indian 2, and Vidaamuyarchi haven’t had a strong impact. They felt more like add-ons than integral parts of the narrative.




His next big project is Coolie, starring Rajinikanth. The stakes are high, and fans are curious to see if his unconventional method delivers yet again—or falls flat.
