anaiis has shared her re-imagining of Lauryn Hill’s ‘To Zion’.
The London-based musician played Chaka Khan’s Meltdown Festival at Southbank Centre last summer, and was invited to try something different.
Working with a full choir – made up exclusively of Black female voices – anaiis decided to re-sculpt a song she has known and loved for years now.
Lauryn Hill’s ‘To Zion’ is a potent moment in the modern evolution of soul music, and in anaiis’ hands it becomes something grander, a full-blown vocal soundscape.
“I loved reimagining Lauryn Hill’s ‘To Zion’. The idea came really organically when I had the opportunity to perform with Chaka Khan’s Meltdown choir,” anaiis shares. “The song is significant to me for obvious reasons, but to be able to bring my own energy to it and to channel it through my musical world has been a really joyous and emotive process.”
It’s an engaging move from the musician, who shared a Brazil-inspired seven-track project last year; catch anaiis on tour with Mereba in the United States this Spring.
