The Association of British Orchestras (ABO), the national body representing orchestras and the classical music industry in the UK, has announced a new initiative to encourage childrens’ participation in music. As part of its ‘An Orchestra in Every School’ initiative, the ABO and its members are pledging to deliver “over a thousand live music making experiences in 2025”, which aims to give “the opportunity to experience the joy and power of live music, no matter their school resources, abilities or disability” to over one million children and young people.
The ABO is worried about a reported drop in music education and take-up in UK schools: 42% of schools are no longer offering Music GCSE (for students aged 14-16) as an option, and Music A-Level entries (for students aged 17-18) have dropped 43% between 2009/10 and 2023/24. The ABO is asking the government for nationwide access to live music and two hours of school time dedicated to live music making for children and young people until the age of 16.
