Carriages will be alive with the sound of folk music in an original evening organised by a community rail partnership
By NOTICEBOARD · 14 May 2025
People in Essex can travel to the sound of music during a special event this month.
The Essex and South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership has teamed up with train operator Greater Anglia, and will host ‘Folk on the Flitch Line’ — an evening of folk music on the Witham to Braintree line on Sunday, May 25.
Original folk songs and covers will be provided by folk duo, The Silburys. Band member Scott Dolling, who also works for Greater Anglia and is the station adopter for White Notley station, has penned an original song about the line, which will be debuted at the event and is thought to be the first song ever written for a community rail partnership.
They will also be joined by guest musicians, Daniel Ribbits and Jon Webb, who also work for Greater Anglia.
Refreshments will be available to purchase on board as passengers sit back and relax to the sound of folk music as the North Essex countryside rolls by.
The first train departs at 18.25 from Witham to Braintree, arriving at 18.42. It will return from Braintree at 18.57.
The second train departs Witham at 19.25, arriving back there at 20.14.
Tickets are available at the bargain price of £5 an adult and £3 a child and must be booked in advance at esscrp.org.uk/events/folk-on-the-flitch-line/
Passengers can stay for the entire event or leave whenever is convenient for them.
June Povey, Community Rail Partnership Officer, said: “We are very excited to be running our first folk music train. We’ve run some similar events on other rail lines in Essex and it always feels like a party on board with people moving around the train to enjoy the music and chat to fellow passengers. Grab your ticket now for what promises to be a lovely evening.”
Greater Anglia’s Customer and Community Engagement Manager, Alan Neville, said: “This is a great way to spend an evening, bring the community together as the stunning countryside passes by and showcase the talents of our fantastic local musicians.”
The Essex and South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership aims to encourage and promote use of the six rail branch lines in Essex and supports local projects developed in partnership with community groups businesses and Greater Anglia.
Their focus is on projects that promote the stations and encourage rail travel through engagement, economic growth and sustainable active travel for all.
