Here are the highlights of Donald Trump’s speech in Michigan marking his first 100 days as president.
Donald Trump has just walked off the stage in Michigan.
Much of his speech tonight echoed what has been heard previously – including some of the greatest hits from his election campaign.
It started in familiar fashion, to the sound of God Bless The USA by Lee Greenwood.
„I miss you guys. I miss the campaign,“ he told the crowd.
Trump then recycled many of his favourite talking points, repeating attacks on judges and his predecessors, as well as making claims about the economy and immigration.
In true Trump style, he was caged by no single topic and strayed freely across everything from „eggs, eggs, eggs“ to crowd sizes, „lefty lunatics“ to the „rigged“ 2020 election.
The speech to mark the first 100 days of Trump’s second term mirrored many of those days that came before – and maybe confirms what we’ll see in the coming days, weeks, months and years.
As Donald Trump delivers his 100-day celebration speech, demonstrators are outside Macomb Community College protesting his presidency.
One placard simply reads: „I dissent.“
Trump says his policies have „banned all government censorship and restored free speech in America“.
I ended all the lawless so-called diversity, equity and inclusion and bull**** across the entire federal government and the private sector.“
He also refers to his order recognising two sexes only.
Trump speaks about his earlier executive order that will ease the impact of his tariffs on US carmakers.
„It’s not so bad,“ Trump says of the order in Michigan.
„They’re going to make so much money. They’re going to have so many jobs,“ Trump said.
Trump is still going – he’s showing no signs of slowing up – and here are some of the topics he’s managed to cover in the last few minutes:
He’s spoken frequently about his crowd sizes – claiming they are bigger than his rivals.
„They’re going to have the biggest crowd they ever had by maybe four or five times,“ Trump said, speaking of a venue he was going to be visiting in the near future.
Pete Hegseth, the originally controversial pick as secretary of defence, also got a shoutout.
You may know his name from the high-profile Signal group chat leak.
„I have so much confidence in him. The fake news is after him, really after him,“ Trump said.
„How are the Houthis doing?“ he added.
He also introduced a number of guests to speak, if so briefly, with one saying: „Trump 2028 anyone?“ – see our 23.46 post for more on three terms.
Trump touches briefly on his tariffs, which have dominated the second half of his first 100 days.
He says China, which is facing tariffs of 145%, „has taken more jobs from us than any country has ever taken from another country“.
„With my China tariffs, we’re ending the greatest job theft in the history of the world.“
He says this does not mean that Beijing and Washington cannot „get along“.
„I think it’s going to work out,“ he says. „They want to make a deal. We’re going to make a deal. But it’s going to be a fair deal.“
Trump, whose frequent criticism of Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell has at times roiled the financial markets in recent weeks, hits out at him again here in Michigan.
„Interest rates came down, despite the fact that I have a Fed person who’s not really doing a good job, but I won’t say that,“ he says.
„I want to be very nice. I want to be very nice and respectful to the Fed,“ Trump said.
„You’re not supposed to criticise the Fed. You’re supposed to let him do his own thing. But I know much more than he does about interest rates, believe me,“ he added.
Some shouting in the crowd seems to grab Donald Trump’s attention for a moment.
He asks: „What’s the problem over there? Is that a radical left lunatic?“
He then releases the commotion is for a child, who he initially thinks is a boy.
„I’m sorry ma’am. I thought it was a guy,“ he adds. „She now has to go home to her mother, who is a big Trump fan.“
The crowd just began chanting: „Three! Three! Three!“ at the US president after he spoke about his terms in office.
He has previously alluded to wanting a third term despite it being illegal under the US Constitution.
Trump laughed, smiled and said: „Thank you,“ to the chants.
He also repeated false claims of having won the 2020 election.
