Good Times: Smathers Reunites With a Bluegrass Classic – World Music Central

Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Jesse Smathers revisits a bluegrass favorite with his latest Mountain Home Music Company single, Good Time Get Together.” Written by the late Randall Hylton and originally recorded by the Lewis Family in the early 1980s, the song combines gospel imagery with the upbeat drive of traditional bluegrass.
Smathers was drawn to the tune after discovering it in Hylton’s catalog. With help from the songwriter’s sister, Wanda Dalton, he tracked down the original lyrics and assembled a fresh quartet arrangement anchored by Nick Goad (mandolin, tenor vocals), Hunter Berry (fiddle), Corbin Hayslett (banjo), Joe Hannabach (bass), Patrick Robertson, and bass singer Dale Perry.
True to the spirit of the original, the track opens with an instrumental lead before Smathers enters on lead vocal. The verses alternate solo lines and four-part harmonies, evoking a jubilant gospel gathering. Instrumental solos, banjo, mandolin, and guitar, follow lyrical cues, reinforcing the song’s vision of a jam session.

This song brings comfort,” says Smathers, “when I think of those who’ve gone on. I imagine the music we’ll make together again someday.”
