One Direction singer Liam Payne died last year in Argentina without a will, leaving over £24 million ($31.8 million) in money, property, and possessions, according to official records.
Despite this, the 31-year-old’s former partner, Girls Aloud singer Cheryl—with whom he shared an eight-year-old son named Bear—has been named as an administrator to his estate, alongside attorney Richard Mark Bray. According to the BBC, Cheryl and Bray intend to “manage the money,” but currently have limited authority and “cannot distribute it.”
“As I try to navigate this earth-shattering event, and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I’d like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being,” said Cheryl following Payne’s death in October. “Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend, and a father to our seven-year-old son. A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again.”
Payne died last year after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. An Argentinian court dropped charges in February of criminal negligence against three of the five people who were charged in connection with his death.
Along with Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan, Payne toured the globe for nearly a decade as One Direction. The group sold millions of records before their split in 2016. He also branched out into a solo career after the group disbanded.
