The rapper has endured a torrid time this year, with his McDonald’s partnership coinciding with an ill-timed attempt to clean out his Instagram feed. The fast food chain have been criticised by the BDS movement in the past, and the link-up was – accidentally – timed with the removal of Stormzy’s past public displays of support with the Palestinian cause, alongside numerous other posts.
The result? Internet bedlam, and perhaps the sharpest criticism Stormzy has ever received in his career.
Hitting the red carpet at the Met Gala, Stormzy has just shared a surprise dose of new material.
The beat leans on Stateside styles, but the flows remain UK-centric, with Stormzy matching largesse against some religious advice.
There’s a curious reference in the title – could it be a reference to his long-time PR Rachel Campbell…? She would undoubtedly have been stretched to the brink protecting Stormzy during his recent commercial partnership, one that resulted in huge blowback for the rapper.
That certainly seems to be her voice-note clipped at the start of the song, and would make this an unusual – but not unique – shout out from an artist to their PR. Off the tops of our heads, Wiley also did the same to Sony trailblazer Taponeswa Mavunga.
We may well be wrong, but ‘sorry rach!’ does feel like an apt move – on top of one of Stormzy’s hardest-hitting recent drops, too.
