The UK’s live industry is under pressure to get a voluntary system up and running to channel money from arena and stadium concerts towards grassroots venues. It’s off to a decent start.
Live-industry body Live has announced that its Live Trust – created to distribute this money – has had more than £500k of ticket contributions pledged so far.
That’s from tours by artists including Diana Ross, Pulp, Mumford and Sons and Hans Zimmer, who donated £1 per ticket sold for their concerts.
“What this demonstrates is that there is a real appetite from performers and their teams to support the wider live ecosystem and we applaud and thank those that have already taken this initiative,” said Live CEO Jon Collins.
However, he warned that there is “still much work to do if we are to convince government that a voluntary rather than statutory levy is both workable and sustainable.”
In separate news, British politician Jeremy Corbyn’s Peace & Justice Project has announced a series of grassroots concerts under the banner ‘A Summer To Save Music’.
It’s aiming to up the pressure on the government to provide more support for smaller venues.
