Analysis, knowledge and skills for the modern global music business
The UK’s umbrella music-industry body, UK Music, is adding its voice to calls for more investment in music education.
Its boss Tom Kiehl has written to the education secretary calling for the government to hire 1,000 new music teachers for schools, as well as supporting efforts to develop new rehearsal spaces and upgrade those that already exist in deprived areas of the UK.
“Without investment in music education our talent pipeline is at risk of drying up along with the huge opportunities for economic growth it brings,” said Kiehl.
“Since elected to office, the Government has argued that ‘a complete education is a creative education’. Now is the time to turn these warm words into action.”
His intervention follows a recent open letter coordinated by Ed Sheeran and signed by a host of prominent musicians, which called for £250m of additional investment in UK music education.
