25.04.2025: UK Music was joined by a raft of leading figures from the worlds of music, education, and politics at the House of Lords in Westminster to celebrate 10 years of the Music Academic Partnership (MAP) scheme – an initiative spearheaded by UK Music’s Director of Education Dr Oliver Morris that aims to inspire people from all backgrounds to pursue a career in music.
For the past decade, MAP has worked to nurture collaborative projects such as research and careers events aimed at informing and engaging with the next generation of industry professionals, from the brightest creators and performers to the executives of tomorrow.
By bringing the music industry and the education sector together, it has provided individuals across the UK with incredible opportunities to take the next steps in their career, equipping them with expert knowledge and practical advice.
UK Music Chief Executive Tom Kiehl initiated the speeches in Parliament at the event on April 23, thanking all the partnered institutions that have helped build MAP over the last 10years, while also shining a light on the hard work of Dr Oliver Morris, whose dedication and passion for music education has shaped the initiative into the catalyst it is today.
UK Music’s Education and Partnerships Operations Officer Courtney Wallace also received recognition for her work to develop the MAP scheme alongside Dr Oliver Morris.
Dr Oliver Morris took to the podium to offer his personal reflections on MAP’s 10th anniversary, thanking all of the partner organisations for their incredible work over the past decade and sharing his optimism and excitement for the future.
Labour MP and co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Music, Alex Sobel, also addressed attendees to highlight the importance of music education, before 2024 Outstanding MAP Graduate (OMG) Award winner Emily Pugh delivered an inspirational speech detailing how MAP has helped her to pursue a career in music and become a live events professional, working across numerous major festivals.
She also paid tribute to the tutors that helped her on her journey and reflected on the quality of education she received from MAP member University of Gloucester.
The event was attended by representatives from across MAP as well as MPs and Peers from the APPG on Music and Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee including Rupa Huq MP, Alex Sobel MP, Lewis Atkinson MP, Steve Race MP, Lord Kevin Brennan, Baroness Dinah Caine, Lord Dave Watts and Baroness Barbara Keeley.
To mark the anniversary UK Music also published a mini MAP report, highlighting the incredible work of its partners over the past decade. You can read more on this here.
