With Miley Cyrus spending her entire life surrounded by the music industry, the hit singer knew the passion, commitment, and sacrifice it took to be a top talent. Having navigated her own career, Cyrus prepared for the release of her upcoming album, Something Beautiful, on May 30th. While thrilled about the career she produced on stage and in Hollywood, she recently opened up about how she almost quit music after performing during the NBC New Year’s Eve special back in 2023.
While just another performance for Cyrus, she felt a little different when taking the stage. Discussing the incident on The Zane Lowe Interview podcast, she revealed, “I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture, which we didn’t know exactly what was going on, so we did it, but it was pretty traumatic, cause it was extremely excruciating. And I did the show anyway, but it was really, really hard on me.”
Suffering through the pain, Cyrus knew the show must go one. And when standing on stage, she appeared in top form, performing hit songs like “Wrecking Ball” and “I Will Always Love You.” She even shared the spotlight with her godmother Dolly Parton for a duet of “Jolene.”

Having a difficult time navigating her feelings at the time, she received some powerful advice from Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels. “I had dinner with Lorne [Michaels] and he said something that now has stuck with me. He goes, ‘Six months. Everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves, and then we start to rebuild.’”
Not a great deal of time, Cyrus started to do the math as she added, “It was Christmas by then and that was New Year’s, so I was expired on my amount of time that I was able to shut down. He’s like, ‘You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me that they were quitting music. Everyone does this. Everyone has these traumatic experiences.’”
With Cyrus appearing to take the advice of Michaels, she continued forward. And now, she is only a few days away from her Something Beautiful album. She also wrote and directed the film, Something Beautiful, which is expected to premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival in June. It will feature over a dozen songs from her new album.
