GENDER politics hits London festivals this weekend as an all-female stage has been announced for Finsbury Park’s Wireless Festival. Underground radio station Rinse FM has curated the line-up for the Smirnoff House stage, which will feature Bad Gyal, Barely Legal, Paigey Cakey, Siobhan Bell, Quay Dash and Work It DJs. It will be hosted by Emerald and Julie Adenuga. The move follows a recent study by Female:Pressure of festivals across Europe, which showed that in 2017 women only accounted for 19 per cent of festival headliners. Other Wireless acts include J Cole, Wiley, Wretch 32, Mabel, Stormzy, Rae Sremmurd and many more over the weekend (July 6-8).
• This year’s Q Awards will take place at the Roundhouse on October 17. Wolf Alice and Idles have been confirmed to play the post-awards gig.
• Catch some summer vibes with Jimmy Cliff at the Roundhouse tonight (Thursday). George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic play the same venue on July 8. Both gigs are part of the new Innervisions Festival taking place at venues across London through to 14.
• Long-time Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra drummer Gilson Lavis, who was also the original drummer for Squeeze, presents his new London art exhibit, Gilson Lavis: From Drums to Canvas, at the Karma Sanctum Soho Hotel from today (Thursday) until August 12.
• Garage pioneers Oxide and Neutrino head up a Friday night session of classic and contemporary cuts at Egg tomorrow (Friday), with R&B singer Shola Ama, double MOBO award winner Kele Le Roc and Brit nominee Sweet Female Attitude joining the Garage Special line-up.
• Then on Saturday, Egg hosts a Pride Special with a Berlin Berlin Birthday celebration.
• Spiritland hosts a late-night screening of a new Studio 54 documentary at Everyman Cinema on Saturday, followed by an after-party at Spiritland’s bar around the corner with Solid State playing beneath the disco ball until 3am.
• Residente – Puerto Rican rapper, writer, filmmaker, producer and co-founder of the alternative rap group Calle 13 – has won 25 Grammy Awards. He plays Koko on July 8.
• Five-time Grammy award-winning jazz bassist Christian McBride brings his new project, New Jawn to London, for the first time on July 12 when he plays the Union Chapel.
• Somerset House Summer Series begins tonight (Thursday) and continues until July 15 featuring the likes of Metronomy, De La Soul and David Rodigan.
• Hyde Park British Summer Time begins tomorrow (Friday) with Roger Waters, Richard Ashcroft, Seasick Steve, Squeeze and more. On Saturday, The Cure celebrate their 40th anniversary and, on Sunday, Santana and Eric Clapton feature. The festival ground is open midweek for the Open House festival, with free gigs, cinema screenings and more, while the street food market and bars will be open to the public.
