AN ANTIQUE lamp once owned by Sir Elton John has been snapped up for £22,320 at an auction in Glasgow.
The decorative Tiffany lamp dates from between 1899 to 1920 and was once part of a sale which saw around 2,000 of the music legend's personal items sold after an exhibit at the V&A Museum in London.
It bears the prestigious mark of Tiffany Studios New York and boasts a kaleidoscope of leaded glass in pinks, blues, greens and milky white.
The spherical bronze base is described by experts at the auction house as 'rare' and is adorned with overlapping leaves.
The former owner's family acquired the lamp at the landmark 1988 Sotheby’s auction that saw a collection of the Rocket Man singer's possessions sold and it became a treasured centrepiece in their home.
It was acquired by Glasgow auction house McTears and put under the hammer as part of their 19th & 20th Century Design – Titans & Classics sale and sold to a telephone bidder.
Experts estimated it would go for between £20,000 and £30,000.
A copy of the original sale catalogue will accompany the Tiffany lamp as it moves to the lucky bidder.
McTear’s director Magda Ketterer said: "The lamp is an extraordinary piece of decorative art, but its connection to one of the world’s most celebrated performers gives it a rare cultural cachet.
"Whether you're a collector, a design enthusiast, or an Elton John fan, this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity."
We previously told how pop legend Elton lost vision in his right eye in July after contracting an infection on holiday in the South of France, and at the time admitted his left eye is “not the greatest."
The ailing star, 78, has since revealed the "distressing" impact of his battle with blindness as he admitted he "can't read" or see his kids play.
He told The Times: "I can see you, but I can't see TV, I can't read.
"I can't see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I'm used to soaking it all up."
Elton and husband David Furnish, 62, share sons Zachary, 14, and Elijah, aged 12.
