This summer, South London-based indie singer/songwriter McCabe is set to share his forthcoming debut album, Sunset Boulevard, arriving on July 11th. The record finds McCabe exploring a treasure trove of influences rooted equally in his love of pop music and darker textures drawn from trip hop and dub. Earlier this year, McCabe shared the album’s lead single, “Vicious,” and today he’s back with another new track, “Days Of Heaven,” premiering with Under the Radar.
“Days Of Heaven” is a sunny and summery starburst of pop soul, reportedly inspired by Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie.” The breezy, swinging drumbeat that introduces the track captures the same boundless energy, buoyed further as McCabe’s falsetto takes center stage. Similarly, the backing vocals, strings, and syncopated guitar rhythms are all pure Motown, moving the track along at a brisk pace until it soars into a sun-lit chorus and a horn-backed instrumental break. The lyrics come steeped the bright, carefree world of a new love, with McCabe’s vocals crooning out a decadent tribute to a temporary dancefloor romance set to nostalgic soul classics: “We didn’t have much / Have much time / Well do you need me? / Yeah sometimes / And the DJ’s / Playing old-soul 45s / And then you lead me / Into the light.”
McCabe says of the track, “I wanted to create a song with a world that was feel-good and summery as a form of escapism for the listener. ’Days Of Heaven’ is a summer holiday love story with a dreamy narrative. Lyrically it is a rarity for me because it has a story-like quality to it, like a novel. It is about love at first sight and the excitement and romance of it all, with a hint of the impending expiry of this feeling.”
Check out the song and video early below, out everywhere tomorrow. Sunset Boulevard is out on July 11th via Half Normal Records.
