What was supposed to be Brookside at The Rose Bowl’s first-ever Latin music event is no longer. The event featuring Carín León, Becky G, Edición Especial and DannyLux has been listed as “cancelled” on the ticketing site AXS, and Goldenvoice has since confirmed the news on the event website.
The “Carín León En El Parque” concert, promoted by Goldenvoice, was announced in February and scheduled to take place on May 24. Goldenvoice hosts rock festivals like Cruel World and Just Like Heaven at the outdoor venue located just outside the iconic Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California. León and the promoter have since pulled the date from their websites.
According to a statement posted on the event page, the concert was canceled due to “circumstances beyond our control.” Goldenvoice assured that refunds would be issued to those who purchased tickets through AXS.
The cancelation of “Carín León En El Parque” isn’t the first notable Latin music event to be called off in Southern California. In December, the major single-day music festival Bésame Mucho at Dodger Stadium was canceled, and organizers gave the same reason: “circumstances beyond our control.” Though Latin music is one of the fastest-growing genres in all facets of the industry, the cancelation of major events like these shows that it isn’t invulnerable to the challenges of live entertainment today, such as high production costs, saturation of markets and ticket prices.
Carín León is one of Mexican music’s biggest stars and recently headlined the Besáme Mucho festival in Austin, Texas. The artist hailing from Sinaloa, who graced the cover of Pollstar last summer after performing at Stagecoach, has successfully crossed over into American markets by fusing elements of country with regional Mexican. He recently performed at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville and had a big show in Mexico City’s Estadio GNP Seguros. The Dec. 7 concert in Mexico City grossed $4,285,642 off 54,831 tickets sold, according to Pollstar Boxoffice reports.
