Owner of Wirral live music bar wants to extend opening hours – Wirral Globe

THE man often credited for helping regenerate a Wirral coastal resort has hit back at those complaining about noise as his live music bar looks to extend its opening hours.
Rockpoint Leisure Limited’s chief executive Dan Davies said he wanted to be a good neighbour and said the changes were needed to make things viable.
Rockpoint Leisure, the company behind the regeneration of Victoria Road in New Brighton, had asked Wirral Council to vary its licence for Rockpoint Records and extend its opening hours.
It wants to be able to stay open until 1.30am every day of the week and sell alcohol until 1am when it currently winds down at 11.30pm.
According to a council report, the business is also looking to increase its licensed area.
However, it has dropped plans following discussions with Merseyside Police to allow it to stay open even later for recognised international sporting events.
The application is due to come before councillors on May 7 where councillors will make a decision.
Mr Davies has often been credited with helping contribute to the regeneration of New Brighton but six representations have been made by people living in the area against the application.
They claim „public nuisance [is] being caused by noise from entertainment emanating from the premises“ and „nuisance being caused by customers of the premises drinking alcohol at the front of the premises and anti-social behaviour from customers leaving the premises.“
According to the report, New Brighton councillor Tony Jones has also expressed concern about the plans.
These stem from “entertainment being provided at the premises into the early hours, seven days a week” and “ongoing noise nuisance being caused by bottle bins being emptied during the early hours.”
Responding to these concerns, Mr Davies told the Local Democracy Reporting Service they had applied for the extra hours to make the business viable, adding: “We take half of our weekly turnover in 10 hours on a Friday and Saturday.
„That allows us to open up on Mondays and Tuesdays when it costs us to be open.
„The reason we do that is I want New Brighton to be open seven days a week.
„That has a number of advantages especially in regeneration and also public safety, anti-social behaviour even down to things like public wellbeing, isolation, mental health, all of those things.“
Mr Davies said when he started regenerating Victoria Road, nearly half of the businesses had closed but now it was fully occupied.
He said the busier the street was and the more people were about, issues like anti-social behaviour would be easier to manage than if it was quiet.
He argued allowing bars to have more flexibility would also help better manage any problems and they’d done temporary later events with no issues in the past.
No complaints have been made by any of the responsible authorities including Environmental Health and Merseyside Police who regulate noise and anti-social behaviour.
Mr Davies added: „A lot of them are real ale drinkers or into music and it’s mainly a good crowd.
„If all of the bars close at 11, then there are insufficient taxis to get people out and people will be waiting around for a bit.“
Mr Davies said he would work to mitigate noise issues stressing they wouldn’t be staying open until 1am every night. He also said no complaints had been made by anyone immediately next door to the bar.
He said: “We work with the other licensed premises. I spend a huge amount of time making the road look nice.
„I have painted a number of things I do not own just to help other people out. I want to be a good neighbour.”
