Can you hear the sweet sounds of spring?
One of the great pleasures of spring—in addition to blooming flowers and chirping baby birds—is the return of outdoor concerts and festivals. March is the start of what appears to be a busy season for musical events, festivals and other outdoor gatherings with music being a main focus.
Time to dust off the folding chairs and canopies, rinse out the cooler and head out to one or all of these events:
Spring Concert Series
Callanwolde Fine Arts Center kicks off its Spring Concert Series which features R&B, folk, rock, and bluegrass. Concerts take place at the historic property’s outdoor amphitheater, starting at 7:30 p.m. and ending at 9:30 p.m. Guests are invited to bring blankets, chairs, and a picnic dinner with drinks. The amphitheater features VIP tables and lawn seating. On March 28, Ruby Velle and the Soulphonics kick off the series. Others in the spring lineup are: Rose Hotel on April 11, Luke Winslow King on April 25, and Ever More Nest on May 9. Ticket information and more details are available at Callanwolde.org. Callanwolde is located at 980 Briarcliff Road NE, Atlanta.
Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival
Music is a big part of the Brookhaven Cherry Blossom Festival with O.A.R. headlining on March 29 and Boyz II Men headlining on March 30. Both performances at 4:30 p.m. But that’s not all, other musical artists such as Gavin DeGraw, Pop 2000 Tour, SWITCHFOOT, Jupiter Coyote, The Calling, and Elijah Johnston perform throughout both days. The festival includes an artists’ market, children’s activity area, classic car show, 5k run, and food trucks. Blackburn Park, 3493 Ashford Dunwoody Road in Brookhaven, is the site for the event. Go to brookhavenga.gov/festival for more information.
Oakhurst Jazz Nights
A popular spring music venue is the lawn of the Solarium in Oakhurst where Oakhurst Jazz Nights take place. All concerts begin at 7 p.m. and end at 9 p.m., are free, and open to the public. “Oakhurst Jazz Nights now in its 20th year, is a picnic style concert with blankets or low chairs (no high back chairs) on the Solarium lawn,” states the venue’s website. “This is a rain or shine event as we move inside the Solarium if the weather changes.” It takes place every Thursday April 3-24. The lineup of artists has not yet been announced. For more information, go to oakhurstjazznights.com. The Solarium is located at 321 W. Hill St., Decatur.
Amplify Decatur
Decatur Square is the main venue for Amplify Decatur April 25-27 with both free and ticketed events throughout the weekend. On April 26, The Last Waltz Ensemble is expected to perform Bob Dylan’s greatest hits, and The Cove, a tribute band, is scheduled to hit the stage April 25 at Avon Theater in Avondale Estates. On April 27, Amplify and Eddie’s Attic will host a show called The Bad Bitches of Country, which pays tribute to the greatest female country artists with performances by local and regional female acts. The evening will include songs made famous by Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Beyonce, and others. Showtime is at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available at EddiesAttic.com.
