Afrobeats superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has boldly declared that Nigeria has the best music genre in the world — and he’s not wrong.
Speaking on an interview with Ebro Darden on his show, The Ebro Show, about the global takeover of Nigerian music, Davido highlighted the country’s rich musical scene that blends culture, rhythm, and innovation.
“I am happy that entertainment switched the narrative. We may not have the best leaders…but we are the best in music.”
He also acknowledged the foundation laid by Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the father of Afrobeat known for his powerful fusion of jazz, funk, and traditional Yoruba music. “Fela’s Afrobeat has a type of sound that is different from the one we sing but since we’ve been labelled as Afrobeats artistes, we just let it,” Davido said.
Davido also shed light on Nigeria’s latest musical wave, Three Steps, a fresh genre born from Amapiano, the South African sound. “There is a new Amapiano sound that’s coming in and I have that in my record, 5ive. It’s called Don’t Know, he explained.
Nigeria’s music industry thrives with Afrobeats, Highlife, hip-hop, Fuji, and Alté, powered by stars like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema, Flavour, Olamide, Tems, Ayra Starr and Pasuma.
