Dr Natalie Rungan, a featured artist at the 11th Uhuru International Festival, captivated the audience with her original compositions that reflected her personal journey, culture, and musical influences.
The festival, held at the Wushwini Pan African Centre in Durban on May 16, provided the perfect platform for Rungan to showcase her unique sound.
Rungan’s performance featured seven original pieces, each telling a distinct story. “Come Dance with Me” celebrated joy and togetherness, while “Africa My Home” paid tribute to the continent that shaped her identity. “African Breyani” playfully fused cultural influences, and “Solitude” explored the depths of introspection. Other standout compositions included “Missing You,” “There’s a Sound in My Head,” and “Unconventionally Yours,” which celebrated individuality.
Rungan said: “All these compositions were chosen to express authenticity and inspire young musicians to embrace their own stories. The turnout was impressive, and what truly stood out was how receptive and engaged the crowd was with the music. There was a genuine energy and appreciation from the audience that made performing and participating even more meaningful. The festival reminded me of the power of collaboration and creativity.
For the rest of the year, I plan to create more opportunities for musical exchange, encourage open-mindedness in performance and learning, and keep the spirit of community and growth alive in every space I’m part of.”
Rungan’s experience at the Uhuru International Festival served as a powerful reminder of the importance of staying true to one’s artistic vision, and she looks forward to continuing to inspire and nurture a sense of community through her music.
