VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — Tomorrow’s Vicksburg 200’s Music and Culture fest will wrap up with the Mississippi Metropolis runway show– a celebration that Raymond Banks, founder and Creative Director of Hoodvenchy, calls a love letter to the southern juke-joint.
Banks has always had fashion “stitched into the fabric of his life.” Born and raised in Vicksburg, Mississippi, he is a graduate of Vicksburg High School, Alcorn State University, and Parsons School of Design. After being approached by the city of Vicksburg last year to host an event as part of the bicentennial celebration, Banks knew that that the event needed to reflect the deep musical roots of the city.
“We are a very music-based city, being on the 61 Blues Trail,” said Banks. “With Mississippi Metropolis, I played off us being on the Mississippi Blues Trail, celebrating the 200 years plus that we’ve had music and different entertainment come through Vicksburg.”
The event will blend the experience of the live music of Ballou and the Bears and a curated mix of music provided by DJ Freddy Lee, as a nod to the old juke-joint days of yore, alongside an evening of runway models displaying Hoodvency’s own line of clothing.
“Hoodvenchy runway shows are always an experience,” said Banks. “It’s more than just looking at clothes and seeing models. I like people to get involved — to see themselves within the models. But it’s not only about fashion; it’s about the music and the scenery around you as well.”
Hoodvenchy, a luxury streetwear brand rooted in cultural pride and innovation, made its debut on Nov. 15, 2018, at Jackson State University. Originally launched as a statement against cultural appropriation in fashion, Hoodvenchy has grown into a nationally recognized label, featured in major fashion weeks and digital publications, and highlighted on “America’s Black Forum.”
“Designing clothes is my passion — I know that sounds cliché, but I truly love what I do,” Banks said. “To see Mississippi Metropolis come alive in Vicksburg, I can’t really put into words how it makes me feel. I love coming back home to do shows. To be able to celebrate the 200th year of Vicksburg and do what I love here is absolutely amazing.”
Doors for tomorrow’s Mississippi Metropolis will open at 7 p.m., with the runway show beginning at 8 p.m. The Levee Street Warehouse is located at 1609 Levee St.
