Iconic UK band prove haters wrong as their music 'saves people's lives' – dailystar.co.uk

Pop group Steps have saved lives with their music. Scores of fans have told them the songs have got them through dark times.
For some they’ve even helped them realise life is worth living. Lisa Scott-Lee said: “We get a lot of people saying our music helps them. It’s really touching. Music can be very therapeutic.”
Lee Latchford-Evans added: “There have been people who have told us our songs have saved their lives.” Faye Tozer added: “A lot of our fans say that the music has helped them through difficult periods in their lives. They say our gigs gave them a chance to let their hair down and be themselves.
“We get so many people thanking us for that. It’s an honour to have our music thought of in that way.”
Steps are most famous for their chart-topping cover of Bee Gees classic Tragedy. But their back catalogue also features a string of emotive tracks including Heartbeat and After The Love Has Gone.
Claire Richards said: “People who love Steps really listen to the lyrics. They tune into it. The songs mean different things to different people. That can help you through difficult times.”
Faye added: “Our songs can be taken in so many different ways. The context each person has changes the meaning. Hearing what they mean to people blows us away. The songs are now completely different to when we first recorded them.”
Steps have also helped many of their fans form lasting friendships. Lisa said: “Some people come to our concerts on their own, but then they make friends. Many of those met at the start of our career made lifelong friends who they are still close to now.
“What’s nice about Steps is we didn’t set out to appeal to a certain demographic. We’ve always said that everyone is welcome.
“We’ve got such a diverse fanbase, which is nice.”
Steps were dismissed by many critics when they first started out in 1997. The five-piece, also including Ian “H” Watkins, were branded naff. But all these years later they’ve had the last laugh after selling 20 million records, winning a BRIT and doing 11 arena tours.
There’s also a new stage musical inspired by their hits titled Here & Now, which is touring the country from August. Claire said: “Some people think we’re this shiny, novelty pop group, but Steps is more than that and it always has been.”
Faye added: “We are so proud of the unapologetic music we make.”
