TIMMINS – As the city's popular music festival gets closer, what the weekend will look like is taking shape. In July, an old favourite is back in the lineup, but the free family fun is off the agenda.
Rock on the River is taking over the events space at Hollinger Park on July 18 and 19.
On the first night, The Headstones are the headliners. Pop Evil, Bif Naked and Failed Attempt will get the audience warmed up. To wrap up the weekend, Brett Kissel and Cooper Alan are on stage on Saturday. The night kicks off with Mitch Jean, followed by North Bay's Cory Marks.
The Northern Roots side stage is returning, and artists can win a spot in the lineup.
While the full contest details aren't out yet, Timmins Festivals and Events Committee (TFEC) — the group that stages Rock on the River — says regional bands or solo acts will be able to apply by submitting a video and bio. The details will be shared on TFEC's social media channels.
So far, the side stage lineup includes Station Radio, Alloy, Invocate, Gabriella Dampier, Leslie Anne Dupuis, and Eric Girard and the Travellers.
There will be no free zone in Hollinger Park.
TFEC says this is because of rising expenses for artist fees, equipment rentals, activity costs and renting the park, as well as a decline in funding and grants.
"For years, Hollinger Fun Days provided a vibrant space for families to enjoy free activities, vendors, and thrilling stunt shows. While we can no longer support this initiative, we sincerely hope another organization will step in to carry on this beloved tradition, ensuring that families and festival-goers can continue to enjoy the experience for years to come," reads a news release from TFEC.
The group says there's also potential for another organization to host camping for out-of-town guests.
"Festival-goers have expressed interest in this feature, and while TFEC would love to offer it, we are stretched too thin to take on the additional responsibility," reads the news release.
