Next one to appear on the Eurovision stage to rehearse his entry is Claude from The Netherlands with his song “C’est La Vie“, which is written by Claude himself, Arno Krabman, Joren van der Voort and Lèon Palmen. Claude was chosen after a careful, phased process that Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS conducted after receiving 331 entries in its call for song submissions.
On his Eurovision entry, Claude says:
“’C’est La Vie’ is a tribute to a parent and for me that’s my mother. As a little boy and throughout my youth, she taught me to see the positive in the things you experience in life, even when you experience setbacks. Even though it looks very dark for a moment, you should always focus on the bright side. That is exactly the message I want to convey. Life is not always easy; it goes up, it goes down, and around and around, but ‘C’est La Vie‘!”
The singer-songwriter Claude, originally from Congo, moved to the Netherlands at the age of nine. He recalls that he and his family first encountered the Eurovision Song Contest not long after he had moved, with all of them cheering together as Conchita Wurst won for Austria. A new annual tradition was born and Claude has continued to follow the Eurovision Song Contest ever since.
His love for music developed further and, with his unique voice and talent, Claude managed to conquer the music scene at home in the Netherlands. His breakthrough came in 2022 with the debut single “Ladada (Mon Dernier Mot)”, which has gone on to amass over 57 million streams. He won the 3FM Award for ‘Best Newcomer’, was named ‘3FM Talent’, and then Qmusic crowned Claude as ‘Best Artist of the Year‘.
Claude released his debut album in Parler Français in 2024, on which he co-wrote all the songs himself. With it, he’s been able to tour the Netherlands and Belgium with his band. In 2024, Claude also took on the role of Ambassador of Freedom, an honourable appointment that he found meant something extra special to him, due to his own past.
Claude now continues to impress on an international scale. The English-French version of “Ladada“ has charted in over 15 countries, including Italy, where it reached the Top 10. And now with the international release of “Layla”, Claude strengthened his position as an artist with global allure.
The Rehearsal
The start of this starts with a handful of piano notes, then it builds and builds, through the first English verse into the chorus, where the bassline drops and the party starts. Aside from his vocal talents, Claude has a natural connection with the camera that makes this feel like a powerful bit of visual storytelling, and he infuses the whole performance with pure joy from start to finish, with two contemporary dancers who dance around him and in and out of shot like they’re just passing through his party.
Many of you will have seen Claude’s outfit on Insta earlier – a purple suit with pearl detail.
This is one of the first performances we’ve seen so far that features less of the LED wall, as in the final chorus there’s an explosion of pink and blue flowers that take up every square inch of the wall, the floor and the frame – you almost expect them to flow into the arena.
Photos from today’s rehearsal will be added as soon as they are made available.
The Netherlands’ second rehearsal is scheduled for Wednesday, May 7, with further details expected on their final staging.
