Music Ally
Analysis, knowledge and skills for the modern global music business
A group of prominent British musicians have written to the UK’s Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer calling for £250m of extra investment in music education.
Led by Ed Sheeran, the open letter has also been signed by Annie Lennox, Central Cee, Coldplay, Dave, Fred Again, Harry Styles, Myles Smith, Robert Plant, Stormzy and YolanDa Brown among other artists.
“As an industry, we bring in £7.6 billion into the UK economy, yet the next generation is not there to take the reins. Last year was the first in over 20 years without a UK global top 10 single or album in the charts,” wrote Sheeran in the letter.
“We collectively ask for a £250m UK music education package this spring to repair decades of dismantling music. Music education is cross-departmental: Culture, Education, Foreign Office, Health & Social Care and Business & Trade.”
Among the requests: more funding for music in schools akin to what already happens for sports; training 1,000 new music teachers; launching a UK-wide fund to support youth-music projects and spaces; launching 500 music apprenticeships; and diversifying the music curriculum in schools, including more involvement from the music industry.
