One of the Logan-area musical groups from the Folk Music of the Southern West Virginia Coalfields project that my colleague, Gloria Goodwin-Rajeha, and I have been researching for the past several years is the Williamson Brothers and Curry (WB&C). I will do a write up on them for a future column, but today’s installment is focused on one of the few women featured in the project — Ova Blevins Plummer, and there is a WB&C connection.
As I was researching WB&C one afternoon, I stumbled upon a striking picture of a woman in a professional photography studio that I’m placing in Logan in the mid to late 1930s or so. The name provided with the picture was Ova Curry Blevins Plummer, and she happened to be the sister of Arnold Curry of WB&C. The rationale for the 1930s date is that Ova was born in 1912 and appears to be in her mid- or late 20s, and the guitars and mandolin in the picture date to the 1930s. Interestingly, the backdrop for the studio photo shows up in two more pictures featuring musicians and another picture of a well-known Logan businessman, so I assume the studio was located in Logan, though there is no visible studio name in the lower corners of the picture.
