Celebrating Decades of the Music of Jackie Daly on Eve of World Fiddle Day
On Friday, May 16th. on the eve of World Fiddle Day in Scartaglin there’s a very special presentation starting at 8pm in the Sliabh Luachra Heritage Centre.
Just ahead of Jackie Daly’s birthday the Sliabh Luachra community will come out in strength to play music selected from Jackie’s career.
Special surprise guests young and old will play their versions of tracks from 1977 to the present day.
De Dannan, Buttons and Bows, Patrick Street
Solo and duet albums as well as recordings made his De Danann era, Buttons and Bows, Patrick Street will all get a look in.
Organiser PJ Teahan will show rare photos of Jackie gathered from his collection dating back to mid seventies to the present day. The night will finish with music from Jackie Daly himself.
Jackie has always enjoyed coming down to Scartaglin and even filmed segments of his Sé Mo Laoch TG4 documentary in the village in February 2016.
“Join us in a celebration of his amazing musical journey and please come early and be in your seats for 7.55pm,” said P.J.
World Fiddle Day Scartaglin 2025 will kick off at 10.30am in the village on Saturday, May 17th with sessions and a launch.
Sliabh Luachra musician in residence Aidan Connolly will hold a one hour workshop in the Heritage Centre at 10.30am for all ages – but not for beginners.
At 11am in Lyon’s Bar, Kate Rowland will become the first female to say a few words and lead the opening tunes to launch the 2025 World Fiddle Day celebrations.
At 12 noon, after the workshop, local musician Seán Butler will lead a session with his friends in Fleming’s Bar.
Facilities for Sessions
There are also facilities in Fleming’s for an impromptu session if needed out the back. The annual photo at the Pàdraig O’Keeffe monument will take place at 1.45pm with the tunes being led by Olivia Tarrant from Ballydesmond whose great grandfather was Dan O’Connell, Knocknagree.
Then proceedings will move to the Heritage Centre for an hour with Nickie McAuliffe launching a special exhibit with the title The Old Fiddle Case in the Heritage Centre and Nickie will also welcome fellow Gradam Cheoil recipient John Carty to Scartaglin and John will host the annual fiddle recital which will be over by 3.30pm approximately.
Open Sessions to Closing Time
Open sessions will then take place in Scartaglin and Castleisland till closing time – like every other year. Each participating musician in Scartaglin will be presented with a unique token to take home with them this year.
“We are extremely grateful to Kerry County Council arts department; Kerry Community Support Fund and Castleisland Chamber Alliance for funding assistance to hold this event and we’ll welcome visitors from New York, London, Europe and Asia to our area – as we have been doing for over the past decade,” said organiser, P.J. Teahan.
