Developed by SKK Developments, Channel 24 is the first ground-up new venue for music and other performances in Sacramento since Golden 1 Center opened in 2016.
For touring artists looking for venues of a certain size, it’s time to say, „Hello, Sacramento.“
Channel 24, the 2,150-capacity live events venue, will open Thursday at 1800 24th St. in Midtown Sacramento with a sold-out show by Tucker Wetmore, and a few dozen more on the schedule.
„We wanted to have a place that had warmth, but was also modern,“ said venue general manager Jon Gunton, of Another Planet Entertainment. „One of our goals is providing a place that feels open and welcoming.“
Developed by SKK Developments, Channel 24 is the first ground-up new venue for music and other performances in Sacramento since Golden 1 Center opened in 2016.
Gunton said the venue’s goal is to book musicians and other acts who stop at Bay Area venues like the Fox Theater in Oakland or The Warfield in San Francisco, but have skipped Sacramento because there wasn’t a comparably sized space here.
„We saw there was this niche for a midsized venue,“ Gunton said. At 42,700 square feet, Channel 24 had an estimated cost of about $12.5 million.
Another Planet and SKK also wanted to have touches to make Channel 24 unique. In the building lobby is an original mural by local artist Cheyenne Randall, greeting visitors with color.
In the main auditorium, both the curtains and proscenium framing the stage have adjustable LED lighting that a performer can incorporate into their own production, or turn off completely, Gunton said.
On the venue floor, where the capacity is about 1,500, there are two bars, designed to make drink lines as short as possible, he said. The upper floor has a third bar with a seated area for concertgoers to take a breather if necessary.
Standing-room-only areas are on the upper floor to the left and right of the stage, with staggered rows to ensure no one’s view is blocked by someone a bit taller in front of them.
Gunton said Another Planet is encouraged by the response from ticket buyers so far. Thursday’s show with country artist Tucker Wetmore is sold out, as are shows next month by indie rock band Empire of the Sun and two with former White Stripes frontman Jack White.
Many of the other shows are close to sold out, Gunton said, adding as people attend concerts and word about Channel 24 spreads like a buzzy underground music act, he expects interest to increase.
Channel 24 is planned to have 110 to 130 shows a year, with maybe one a week during a slow month like January and several in a busy month like October, Gunton said.
„We’re excited about how excited Sacramento has been about us,“ he said.
