On March 24, 2025, Winnipeg will take part in a nationwide effort to raise awareness about tuberculosis (TB) by lighting up several landmarks in red for World TB Day. This event is part of a broader campaign across Canada, where more than 51 monuments and landmarks will be illuminated to highlight the global fight against TB.

World TB Day is observed annually on March 24 to mark the 1882 discovery of the bacterium that causes tuberculosis by Dr. Robert Koch. The theme for 2025, “YES! We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver,” emphasizes global efforts to eliminate TB by ensuring access to prevention, treatment, and care.
Despite being both preventable and treatable, TB remains a significant health challenge. In 2023 alone, 1.25 million people died from TB, and 10.6 million were diagnosed with the disease. In Canada, TB disproportionately affects Indigenous and newcomer communities, highlighting the need for continued awareness and action.
By lighting landmarks in red, Winnipeg and other cities hope to draw attention to this ongoing public health issue and show solidarity with those affected. Residents and visitors are encouraged to check out the illuminated sites, take photos, and share them on social media using #YesWeCanEndTB to help spread awareness and support the fight against tuberculosis.
